A Dark Romanticism

Today was a great day to photograph something different. Me and my friend Chrissy went to a cemetery to shoot ourselves in semi-goth attire, trying our best to be dark romanticists. We both got some great images to work with. On a side not, my website is being redesigned along with my logo and business cards. I will also be opening up a fine art print site with affordable prints for sale.

Isn’t it funny how things change when you make the monumental decision to quit your full-time job for a part-time job. I did that few months ago. I had a full-time college workload at the Art Institute and needed time to pursue my photography on Colorado. For a month, I was completely stressed on how to pay the bills, will I have enough to eat, what if this, what if that. You know something, things have turned out so well, and so much better then I thought. My grades are improving, my photography has also, even though the business end hasn’t improved, but in this economy, I’ll do what I can til then. I have currently done the cover shoot for the first two issues of Chrysalis Magazine and have a book coming out this August/September time-frame. So, it is funny that I spent so much time worrying over something I didn’t have to. I make more than enough money to cover all my bills. My stress level is down, my mood is so much more positive, and the outlook is good. I posted a couple of my latest images I took with model Kirsten Budd.

A new direction.

With my ads being released this September and October for my northern Colorado market, I am branching in a new direction. Quite literally in some ways and artistic in others. I spent today at a photo walk in Fort Collins, Colorado. I think I have a few good photos to show for it. I also managed to pick up an event for an organization. I decided to do it pro bono. Mostly, the marketing I can do there would beat the payment, plus its a good cause. I am also in the works of setting up a show for hopefully this October or November in Fort Collins to display my work and to let people know that I am there. Word of mouth will do so much more than any phone book ad will ever do.

A Studio, A thought, A dream?

After writing a small amount in my earlier blogs, I have found myself in a awkward position. I have 3 possible choices ahead of me as to what I should do with my studio. Number 1, is stay in the place I am at now. This the basement of a tattoo shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Odd place I know, but the overhead was cheap and window advertising was kick ass. Number 2, is moving the studio into my business partners living room. Zero overhead, no window space, but I’d have fresh air and no stigma of being in a tattoo shop. I love the tattoo shop btw. These guys do great work. Number 3, is teaming up at a local music venue, (non-country) and work out of there. Good music, except for sound checks, musicians instead of tattoo artists, and the possibility of a gallery along with studio space. down side of it, is overhead may be considerably more. What is an artist to do? I dream of a bigger studio and ironically the band that is starting the music venue is called Another Dream…irony or coincidence?

Being a Photographer

Being a photographer in Northern Colorado and Southeastern Wyoming I have had the chance to photograph different people. There seems tho, to be a large amount of photographers. Each one charging something different than the other to outbid or adding an extra set of prints to give them an edge on the competition. I really can’t blame them. Photography is a fickle game. I love it, don’t get me wrong, it’s just hard to carve my own niche in the system. With me entering into the Fort Collins market, I will have to enter the competition again. I think or at least I hope I will do well here. Same with the Greeley Photography market. All these photographers are good. So here I am, with my little knife, whittling away at the photography market. Making my own path and giving people something new. Custom designed portraits. Let me guess, you heard that before, and then go to the photographers sites and see the same assembly-lined portraits. Same cheesey backgrounds. I look at it this way. Those make money. If someone wants shots like that I tell them to go somewhere else. I am an artist. I tell people I photograph that we will do something different and laugh mischievously. I tell my clients, if theres a joint, it will be bent. You may feel crazy, but the portraits gonna be great. So that is my niche in the Colorado photographers circle. My prices will be like the others. Either to high or just the right price. Visit my site. All my cost are there for you to explore. Just one more thing when thinking of a photographer. Planning An Event

Since I have ads coming out in the phone book this september and october, I figure I would celebrate this occasion by having a show in old town Fort Collins. A show to promote by photography in Northern Colorado and the surrounding area. Hopefully, one of the many coffee shops I asked to do this in say yes or at least give me a no so I can mark them on my list. Is wedding cake to odd to serve at a photography show?
